Overview

Why Every EV Needs Paint Protection Film

Electric vehicles share a problem traditional cars don't have: factory paint that's noticeably softer than the rest of the market. Tesla, BYD, Chery, Polestar and most other EV manufacturers use thinner, water-based paint systems to meet weight, emissions and production-speed targets — and the result is paint that picks up rock chips, swirl marks and scratches faster than the petrol vehicles your EV is replacing.

Add the way EVs drive — instant torque off the line, aggressive regenerative braking that throws debris at the front bumper, and far higher kilometres per year on average — and the front end of an electric vehicle sees a punishing amount of road debris in its first 12 months.

Paint protection film (PPF) is the only product that physically prevents this damage. It's a self-healing thermoplastic urethane layer that absorbs the impact before it reaches your paint. At Adex Detailing in Tullamarine we've installed PPF on hundreds of EVs across Melbourne — and every one of them was protected with the same approach: cover what the road throws at it.

The EV Paint Problem

Why EV Paint Damages Faster Than Petrol Cars

It's not your imagination. Electric vehicles really do pick up paint damage faster — here's the engineering reason why.

🎨

Thinner Water-Based Paint

Tesla, BYD, Chery, Polestar and most EV makers use water-based paint systems applied in fewer, thinner coats than legacy automakers. It cures faster, weighs less and emits less VOC — but it's measurably softer than the paint on a comparable BMW or Mercedes petrol car.

Instant Torque, More Debris

EVs deliver peak torque from zero RPM. The result is more aggressive launches, faster pickup of loose road debris by the front tyres, and more rock impacts on the front bumper, bonnet and lower panels in normal driving.

🛣️

Higher Annual Kilometres

EV owners drive ~30% more kilometres on average than petrol owners — fuel costs aren't the barrier they used to be. More road time = more rock chips, more swirl marks from washes, and more cumulative paint wear in the first 24 months.

🔁

Regen-Braking Kickup

One-pedal driving means EVs decelerate without conventional braking — but it also means the front tyres are throwing debris back into wheel arches and onto fenders constantly, instead of just at hard stops.

💸

Repaints Hurt Resale

Touched-up panels are a known issue at EV trade-in time. Tesla, BYD and Polestar buyers all check for paint matches with a meter. A front bumper repaint can knock $3,000–$8,000 off resale on a 3-year-old EV.

🛡️

PPF Solves All of It

Self-healing thermoplastic urethane film takes the impact your paint would have taken. Minor scratches in the film heal with warmth. The factory paint underneath stays untouched. When the film is eventually removed, the panel underneath is showroom-fresh.

FAQ

EV Paint Protection Film — Common Questions

Yes. Most EVs — Tesla, BYD, Chery, Polestar and others — leave the factory with water-based paint that is noticeably softer than traditional automotive finishes. Combined with the higher torque and regen-braking debris kick-up that EVs see at the front end, paint protection film is the most effective way to prevent rock chips, swirl marks and scratches on a new electric vehicle.

At Adex Detailing in Tullamarine, EV paint protection film starts from $1,200 for a partial front (bumper only), $3,000 for a full front package (bumper, bonnet, fenders, mirrors), and from $8,000 for full-vehicle coverage. Final pricing depends on the specific model — a Tesla Model 3 Highland, BYD Atto 3, Chery Omoda E5 or Polestar 2 will all sit toward the lower end, while larger EVs like the BYD Sealion 7, BMW iX, Kia EV9 or Tesla Cybertruck require more film.

Every electric vehicle available in Australia. Tesla (Model 3, S, X, Y, Cybertruck), BYD (Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 6/7, Shark, Dolphin), Chery (Omoda E5, Tiggo, Jaecoo), Polestar (2, 3, 4), Volvo EX30/EX90, the full Mercedes EQ range, BMW i (iX, i4, i5, i7), Lucid Air, Genesis Electrified GV70/G80, Audi e-tron, Porsche Taycan and Macan EV, Kia EV6 and EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, MG4 and ZS EV, Cupra Born and Tavascan, GWM Ora, Nissan Ariya, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Subaru Solterra, Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ, Smart #1 — and anything else with a battery and a paint job.

No. Our installers are trained to cut around or precisely over Tesla Autopilot cameras, BYD DiPilot sensors, Polestar Pilot Assist hardware, parking sensors, radar units and lidar emitters. Modern paint protection film is optically clear and does not interfere with cameras when correctly fitted.

Our Adex PPF carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty covering yellowing, cracking, peeling, staining and delamination. In practice the film typically performs at full strength for 7–10 years on a well-maintained electric vehicle, after which it can be safely removed without damaging the factory paint underneath.

Yes, and for most EV owners this is the ideal setup. PPF on high-impact panels (front bumper, bonnet, fenders, mirrors) prevents physical damage, while a ceramic coating across the entire vehicle — including on top of the PPF — adds chemical resistance, hydrophobic behaviour and easier maintenance. Our EV Ultimate Protection package combines both.

A partial front (bumper only) takes 3–4 hours. Full front PPF on a Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion, Chery Omoda E5 or Polestar 2 takes 1.5–2 days. Full-vehicle PPF on any EV typically takes around 5 days in our climate-controlled Tullamarine workshop. We hold the vehicle indoors throughout, away from dust contamination.

Brand-new is always better. The factory paint is at its peak — no embedded contaminants, no microscratches, no UV degradation. Installing PPF in the first 6 weeks of ownership locks the paint in showroom condition. We can still install on a used Tesla, BYD or Chery, but we'll typically recommend paint correction first to get the paint back to peak before the film goes on.
